  • What is biofeedback ?
Biofeedback refers to a wide range of modalities that can be used to train people to improve their health by using information from their own bodies. For instance, you use simple biofeedback whenever you take your temperature or weigh yourselves and then use that information to decide how best to care for yourselves. Biofeedback trains people to recognize the physical signs and symptoms of stress and anxiety such as increased heart rate, body temperature, muscle tension etc. The goal of biofeedback training is to become aware of your body’s responses, particularly when you’re stressed and anxious, and to then learn how to control those responses to achieve the desired outcomes. Digital technology allows the measurements of various internal body functions, and information obtained is used to coach and train clients to improve a wide variety of physical and emotional challenges as well as to improve heart and brain coherence. When working with a biofeedback device, the changes in physiological function can be readily observed on a screen, but in time you can learn to maintain the beneficial changes without the use of equipment. Biofeedback is a risk-free way to take control of your own physical and mental wellness. With training, you will be able to detect health issues earlier – or even before they arise, as well as track the effectiveness of treatments of chronic illnesses. With biofeedback, you must take an active role and commit to regular practice in order to develop a skill, much like learning to play a musical instrument. During biofeedback, sensors are connected to different parts of your body. These pads might be used to: Monitor your brain waves Check the temperature of your skin Measure muscle tightness Monitor your heart rate Monitor your breathing rate and patterns
  • Types of Biofeedback
Blood Pressure Biofeedback This type specifically focuses on hypertension, helping people learn how to lower blood pressure with relaxation and breathing techniques. Heart Rate Variability It measures variations in the time between heartbeats. It’s useful for a number of different disorders including anxiety, arrhythmia, asthma and depression. Respiratory biofeedback or Breathing It monitors breathing rates and patterns. With training, people can learn to have greater control over their breathing rates which can help in a variety of situations including when people experience anxiety. Thermal biofeedback or Skin Temperature It utilizes sensors that detect blood flow to the skin. Generally, there is a drop in body temperature during times of stress, biofeedback devices can help people better detect when they are starting to feel distressed therefore can apply some stress management techniques. Electromyography (EMG) biofeedback or Muscle Tension EMG biofeedback measures muscle tension by using sensors to measure muscle tightening. This helps make you aware of muscle tension, so you can take steps to control it. Anxiety and stress cause the muscles to tense up, which can lead to pain and stiffness in almost any area of the body.
